매일유업 평택 게이트하우스는 방문객들을 위한 카페와 회의실, 그리고 직원들을 위한 복지매장과 경비동이 한 장소에 모여 있는 복합시설이다. 공장에서 일하는 모든 직원들의 출퇴근 경로인 동시에, 방문객들을 회의실과 상업 공간으로 유도해야 하는 복잡한 동선체계를 효율적으로 엮기 위해 중앙에 큰 중정을 두었다. 1층에서는 중정을 감싸는 두 개의 ㄴ자형 건물이 개방된 경로와 폐쇄된 경로의 적절한 조율을 가능하게 하고, ㅁ자형으로 약간 어긋나게 얹혀진 2층은 중정을 내려다보며 다양한 공간들을 하나의 건물로 묶는다. 경비원들의 코너공간은 철거된 예전의 경비동과 같은 규모와 방향으로 배치되어 예전의 직원동선을 크게 바꾸지 않으면서도 새롭게 확장된 프로그램들을 쉽게 관리할 수 있게 배려했다. 단순해 보이는 외관 뒤에는 콘크리트 외벽과 철제프레임을 구조적으로 연결하는 고난도의 구조시스템과 입면의 겹침현상을 없애기 위해 1층과 2층의 구조 프레임들을 분리 하는 등 다양한 노력의 흔적들이 숨겨져 있다. 2층의 금속루버들은 내부의 프로그램과 방향에 따라 3개의 다른 각도로 휘어져 있어서 외부에서는 직사광선을 차단하고 내부에서는 불필요한 시선들을 차단한다.
The Gatehouse Project started as a modest expansion of the existing guard station to add a retail space that had to be relocated to make room for the new laboratory, but soon grew into a two-story pavilion to accommodate retail spaces, classrooms, and meeting rooms for visitors and employees. As a solution for simplifying a complex web of circulation routes, a landscaped courtyard was placed in the middle, where the air of openness conceals the tightly restricted control points to block unwanted access into the factory compounds. Two L-shaped wings on the ground floor form a diagonal passage through the courtyard, and the square-shaped second floor is slightly offset to form a generous overhang over the perimeter of the ground floor. The security check point remains in the same location where the old guard station used to be. The simple exterior appearance conceals a series of acrobatic structural design strategies such as the steel-concrete composite system, or double-stacked horizontal beams to eliminate surface offsets between facade elements. The shading screen on the second floor has three different opening angles to control daylight as well as unwanted sightlines.
